San Antonio boy, 12, leads police on chase that ends with crash

Boy is in custody after leading police on a chase, causing 3-car crash

A 12-year-old boy was taken into police custody after he led an off-duty officer on a chase and crashed into multiple vehicles, San Antonio police said.

The pursuit began just before 9:30 p.m. Thursday at the Saddle Ridge Apartments in the 5700 block of North Knoll.

San Antonio police say the boy apparently got into a fight with his father and took his father's Cadillac. Police said the boy was off his medication and may have attempted to kill himself before he fled the apartment complex.

An off-duty police officer at the apartment complex saw the 12-year-old drive away and began to follow him. The officer and the boy then crashed at Huebner Road and Whitby, but the boy did not stop, police said.

Police said he continued eastbound on Huebner and crossed Fredricksburg Road into oncoming traffic.

He struck three cars at a stoplight and eventually came to a stop when he crashed in front of the Bill Miller's Bar-B-Q on Huebner Road.

The boy was taken into custody a short time later. Police said charges were pending as of 11 p.m. Thursday.

The off-duty officer involved in the chase and the other drivers all suffered minor injuries, police said.
