Two firefighters were hospitalized after a fire destroyed a northeast Bexar County home and spread to another early Monday morning.
Bexar County fire officials responded to the fire around 2:45 a.m. at a home in the 8100 block of Whistler.
Fire officials said the home that initially caught fire collapsed and flames quickly spread to another home.
Everyone inside the second home got out safe, but fire officials feared a family remained inside the collapsed home. They later determined the family was out of town.
Fire officials took a defensive approach upon arrival because a gas line ruptured. Crews got the gas line under control and quickly extinguished the flames.
A pair of firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the fire and had to be taken to the hospital, one for an injured ankle and the other for heat exhaustion.
Firefighters from five volunteer fire departments along with the Bexar County Fire Marshal's Office and Bexar County Sheriff's Office responded.
