HDRC approves apartments at former Univision site

Historic and Design Review Commission asks developer to redesign parking garage elements

Greystar shows design plans for new apartment building set to be built on the site of the former Univision studios.

SAN ANTONIO – The city's Historic and Design Review Commission voted Wednesday to approve construction of a new 350-unit apartment complex on the site of the former Univision television studios in downtown San Antonio.

Demolition of the building last month resulted in a court battle and several protesters being arrested at the site located at the corner of South St. Mary's and Cesar Chavez Boulevard.

Representatives from Greystar, the developer of the $55 million apartment complex, showed off its latest designs for the project addressing some of the concerns brought up in past meetings.

Some of the changes included reducing the overall scale of the project, new color choices and a third redesign of the parking garage.

The commission voted to approve the design with some stipulations. The panel wants Greystar to redesign the screening used to camouflage the parking structure to help it blend in better with the rest of the housing units.

At the hearing, there were no signs of the protesters who were arrested last month for trespassing on the site after the city gave the go-ahead for demolition.

One speaker did raise concerns about the interpretive panels that are to be included in the project that will commemorate the site of the former Univision building, which was the home of the first Spanish language TV station in the country.

The developer said they are still designing those panels and will be working with several stakeholders and the city's Cultural Affairs department as they move forward.

With Wednesday's approval, the developer can now obtain building permits and begin the construction process.

In addition to working out the details on the parking garage, the developer has also agreed to remove light poles from the top level of the garage.
