Standoff at Valero store in Fredericksburg ends with gunfire, arrest

No injuries reported, suspect arrested at Valero on Highway 16

FREDERICKSBURG, Texas – Fredericksburg police arrested a man Wednesday night following a standoff where shots were fired at a Valero store on Highway 16 near Adams Street.

At one point during the standoff, the suspect, a man in his 20s with previous military experience, fired at police and officers returned fire, Fredericksburg Police Chief Steve Wetz said.

The man entered the Valero Wednesday evening with and handgun and told the two employees to leave, then locked himself inside, police said. Officers were able to talk to contact the suspect and speak to him by phone, but said calls from his family members interrupted their talks with the suspect.

"He said he was going to come out several times, and then about 10 p.m. he stood up, pulled his weapon and started firing through the glass, and we returned fire," Wetz said. "After about 10 minutes of talking to him again, we finally got him to come to the door and we went in and secured him and got him in handcuffs."

No injuries were reported from those shots that were fired, police said. Fredericksburg police have not determined what charges the suspect will face and why he decided to hole himself up in the Valero.
