SAN ANTONIO – Earlier this month, San Antonio police Officer Robert Deckard was shot in the head during a high-speed chase as he tried to catch a pair of robbery suspects.

Deckard died on Dec. 20 after he was removed from life support.

On Friday, Freddy's Frozen Custard and Steakburgers announced that between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., the restaurant chain would donate 20 percent of the proceeds from all 10 area locations to the Officer Robert Deckard Benefit Fund.

"We didn't hesitate for a moment to say that we would love to get involved," said Freddy's CEO James Oberg. "(We said,) 'Just tell us what we need to do and we'll put it together - we'll work together.'"

Police Chief William McManus stopped in at the Freddy's in the Rim on Interstate 10 West to personally thank the restaurant chain and its customers for their generosity.

"The guy was an all-American cop," McManus said. "He was committed. He was enthusiastic about his work. He was great with the community."

Donations can also be made at any Generations Federal Credit Union location in his name or by credit card via this website.
