Editorial: Preservation vs Progress

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio has a rich and long history that must be respected.
But, we're also trying to be a modern city, international destination and economic center.
As San Antonio expands, we can honor our past without being stuck in it.
The city has many interests whose aim is to protect and conserve areas of historical significance.
While that's important, we also need to encourage new developments and improvements that impact the future.
Many recent projects, including Hemisfair, Alamo Plaza, the closing of Main Street and the demolition of the old Univision building have ignited passions on all sides.
It's shown us that there needs to be a better balance between preservation and progress if San Antonio hopes to distinguish itself in the long term.
Along the way, more people should participate in a transparent process to help shape what San Antonio becomes.
I'm Phil Lane. Let us know what you think.
