Workers sickened by gas at NE side produce plant

Fire crews say chlorine fumes overcame workers

SAN ANTONIO – Chlorine fumes overcame workers at a northeast side produce plant Sunday morning sending ten to the hospital.

The problem started just after 7 a.m. Sunday morning.

Firefighters say they got a call for a difficulty breathing at the Fresh From Texas produce processing facility in the 3600 block of Highpoint.

But when paramedics got there they realized they had larger problem.

The fire department dispatched haz-mat crews and a mass casualty response team to the scene.

A fire chief says ten workers affected by chlorine had to be transported to hospitals.

The fire chief says the chlorine appeared to come from a system in the processing plant.

A team from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration arrived on scene Sunday afternoon.

The fire chief says OSHA has now taken over the investigation to determine what caused the chlorine incident.
