An $82 million expansion of Loop 1604 from Culebra Road to Bandera Road will break ground Monday.

The improvements include a four-lane expressway section, new overpasses at Shaenfield Road, New Guilbeau Road and Braun Road.

Crews will also upgrade frontage roads, city streets and tie-in transitions to existing Loop 1604.

"We're going to have to deal with the construction and the chaos and everything that it's going to ensue, and hopefully it will pay off at the end," said Elisa Ayala, who lives nearby.

Most drivers agreed the expansion has been a long time coming. Traffic, congestion and accidents have always been a problem according to Freddy Villarreal who lives in the area.

"It's very bad. The traffic is really hectic, I don't even take the highways to get to work I usually take the back roads not to deal with it," said Freddy Villarreal.

The Texas department of Transportation believes the improvements will help with safety, mobility and even economic development of the area.

According to the TxDot, the funding for the project came from a surplus of money identified in 2012 by TxDot officials and allocated by authority of the state legislature.
