Teen girl helps family escape duplex fire

Fire damages duplex on Ridge Country

A 13-year-old girl helped her family escape a fire at a North Side duplex early Monday morning.

The teen said she awoke to flames inside her bedroom just after 2:15 a.m. and ran to her father's bedroom to alert her family.

San Antonio fire crews responded to the duplex in the 34000 block of Ridge Country Street and battled the fire for close to 30 minutes before it was extinguished.

The family rushed to safety and no injuries were reported, fire officials said.

The family also alerted the next-door neighbor who said her home smelled like smoke, but was livable.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Monday morning.

Firefighters have not released damage estimates, but officials reported heavy damage to one side of the duplex with smoke damage to the other side.

A crew boarded up the burned-out windows to secure the property until repairs could begin to make the home livable again.
