CPS Energy worker accused of copper wire theft

Oscar Patino, 36, facing 3 counts of theft

An employee of CPS Energy is accused of stealing on the job by taking dozens of pounds of copper wire from the public utility and selling it.

Oscar Patino, 36, has been charged with three counts of copper theft. The company notified the Bexar County Sheriff's Office and Department of Public Safety of the thefts in November of last year.

Sheriff's investigators said they learned that Patino had taken the copper wire from several spools inside a CPS Energy building where he worked, and then sold the wire to a metal recycling business.

On one occasion, they said, Patino sold 130 pounds of copper wire without his employer's permission. Patino was arrested Monday, the affidavit stated.
