High-speed chase in west San Antonio ends in crash, 4 arrests

Santiago Santana, Saul Martinez, Frank Garcia, Jose Morales, Jr. charged

A police chase across the city's West Side ended in a wreck and the arrest of four men early Tuesday morning.

The chase began around 1 a.m., when San Antonio police spotted the men in the 8600 block of Potranco Road near Highway 151.

Officers believe the men were trying to steal equipment from a construction site.

Police said one of the men noticed the officers and the group jumped into a stolen truck and sped away from the site.

Police said the men headed east on Highway 151, reaching speeds over 80 mph. They also headed the wrong way at some point and ran other drivers off the road, police said.

"They were aggressive in their behavior, very violent," said Officer Roger Zuniga of the San Antonio Police Department. "There was potential to put people's lives in danger, so that's why the chase was authorized. Luckily, nobody was hurt and no reported accidents."

At first, officers followed the men on foot, but then took to the sky and kept their distance.

"Once the helicopter arrived on scene, the officers backed off, turned off their lights, turned off their siren, and the helicopter was able to monitor the suspect's vehicle as it fled," Zuniga said.

The truck exited the highway on SW 36th Street and headed north to Eldridge Avenue, but the driver turned back around and crashed in an alley on 34th Street, police said.

All four men bailed out of the pickup. Two were caught right away by officers, police said. SAPD used its Eagle helicopter to spot the third man and a K-9 unit tracked down the fourth man a short time later.

Santiago Santana, 27, was charged with trespassing and evading arrest and vehicle theft.

Saul Martinez, 27, was charged with trespassing and evading arrest.

Frank Garcia, 21, and Jose Morales, Jr., 20, were charged with trespassing.
