Firefighters discover body in East Side home

Body found inside home near I-35 at North Pine Street

San Antonio firefighters discovered the body of a man believed to be in early 80s Tuesday morning at a home on the city's East Side.

Firefighters initially responded to a report of a fire just before 5 a.m. at a home in the 6000 block of Interstate 35 near North Pine Street and discovered the body inside.

Lt. James Bennett of the San Antonio Fire Department Arson Squad said it doesn't appear any foul play was involved.

A neighbor called 911 after smoke poured into his adjoining apartment and set off a smoke detector. Another neighbor kicked in the door to the victim's home.

A neighbor told KSAT 12 News that the victim didn't have any smoke detectors because he removed them.

The cause of death and fire weren't immediately known.
