Suspect in Northwest San Antonio apartment slaying surrenders

Sara Mary Clements, 24, arrested on murder charge

A 24-year-old woman identified as Sara Mary Clements has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a man at the Cordoba Apartments on San Antonio's Northwest Side.

The victim, identified in an arrest warrant affidavit as Alex Navarro, 22, was shot in his own apartment early Thursday morning, but died in a friend's apartment where he went for help, police said.

Paramedics who rushed to the scene in the 7800 block of Callaghan Road shortly after 1:30 a.m. were unable to save him.

In the affidavit, police stated that the friend told investigators Navarro repeatedly uttered the name, "Sara," just before he died.

Detectives spoke to others in the apartment complex, trying to determine who "Sara" was, the affidavit stated.

However, Clements later surrendered, turning herself in at Public Safety Headquarters, according to Officer Roger Zuniga, spokesman for SAPD.

"Because of the coverage in the media it appears she contacted detectives because of that," he said.

The affidavit stated that during questioning by detectives, Clements gave several different accounts of what happened, blaming her boyfriend for the shooting at one point.

Detectives said she later told them she would cooperate because they eventually would find text messages that she had exchanged with Navarro shortly before he was killed, the affidavit stated.

When investigators asked Clements to hand over her cellphone, they said she began deleting some of the text messages in front of them, the affidavit stated.

Clements was booked into the Bexar County Jail Friday morning.
