NW Side bar combats crime by changing hours

Stacy's Sports Bar on Blanco has seen assaults, shootings; Neighbors fed up

A Northwest Side sports bar that nearby neighborhood residents say has caused big problems for their community has made some changes to its operating procedures.
Stacy's Sports Bar, located on the 3800 block of Blanco, has seen its share of fights, assaults, disturbances and shootings.

"There was about three shots last night, so I closed my door because I was really scared for myself and son," said Margarita Guerrero, who lives nearby.

Residents, local officials and San Antonio police have joined together to address the issues by filing a petition with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, stating that the bar "affects the general welfare, health, peace and safety of the people."

"I lock my doors and everything and if anything if I hear something, I just peek through the window" said concerned neighbor Gloria Cantu.

Stacy's Sports Bar has agreed to change its hours. The bar will now shutdown at 12:30 a.m. and not re-open until after 6 a.m.

"Maybe it would help," Cantu said. "Hopefully it would."

For others, an hour change is simply not enough.

"It's not going to change. They should just close it because it's not going to change nothing. It's bad," said Lucy Ramirez, who lives near the bar.

The bar has also agreed to withdraw its application for a late-hours permit. They will not eligible to re-apply until Nov. 4, 2015.
