Off-duty Bexar Co. deputy injured

Deputy hurt in Walmart altercation

An off-duty Bexar County Sheriff's Office patrol deputy was hurt Saturday after an altercation at an East Bexar County Walmart.

According to Roseanne Hughes, a spokeswoman with the sheriff's office, the incident happened at the store in the 4000 block of North Foster Road around 5:45 p.m.

Hughes said one of Walmart's loss prevention employees confronted a man suspected of shoplifting.

A fight broke out between the two and the deputy, who had been working an off-duty security detail at the Walmart, tried to stop the fight.

The suspect allegedly started punching the deputy. The deputy was able to deploy his Taser, but the suspect apparently pulled the Taser prongs out and fled.

Hughes said the man fled in a pickup.

The deputy was transported to Northeast Baptist Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
