Son charged with stabbing, beating father with pipe

Charges against Mark Munoz, 26, could be upgraded

The son of a man in a coma at San Antonio Military Medical Center has been arrested in his father's beating and stabbing.

San Antonio police arrested Mark Munoz, 26, on Tuesday, the day after he was accused of assaulting his father, Cruz Munoz, 46, at a home on the 1200 block of Division Avenue.

The attack happened as a result of an argument, according to investigators.

"They were involved in a disturbance that escalated quickly to the point that they began fighting with a pipe," said SAPD Sgt. Javier Salazar. "At some point during the struggle, the suspect produced a knife and stabbed the victim several times in the upper body and then additionally struck him in the head with the pipe."

Police said Mark Munoz claims his father hit him with the pipe. Charges against Mark Munoz will likely be upgraded to murder if the elder Munoz does not survive.

Mark Munoz was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, serious bodily injury.

Police took him into custody Tuesday at a relative's home without incident.
