San Antonio police officer shoots, kills robbery suspect
SAPD: Suspect crashed into vehicles, fought officer
An armed robbery suspect was fatally shot by a San Antonio police officer Sunday evening after a chase, several crashes and a physical struggle between the officer and suspect on the Northwest Side.
According to an SAPD press release, at approximately 8:20 p.m., officers located a vehicle near Culebra and Old Grissom Roads which matched the description of a vehicle involved in two separate armed robberies and a theft earlier Sunday.
Officers followed the vehicle toward Loop 410, but the driver began to go the wrong way on the frontage road.
Officers stopped following the vehicle, but the driver continued the wrong-way and crashed into several vehicles, the release stated.
Police said the suspect fled on foot from the crash scene with officers pursuing on foot.
The suspect attempted to carjack a vehicle on Culebra Road, and an officer was struck by the vehicle the suspect was attempting to steal, the release stated.
According to the release, the officer regained his composure and got into a hand to hand struggle with the suspect.
The officer was then forced to use deadly force on the suspect and fired at least two shots, the release stated.
The suspect was hit and died at the scene. The officer suffered minor injuries and at least one person involved in the crash was transported to a hospital for treatment.
The suspect was believed to be in his early 30s. His name has not been released.
SAPD officials said the officer is a two and a half year veteran of the force and has been placed on temporary administrative duty as per department protocol.
The shooting remains under investigation by the Officer Involved Shooting Team.
