Every year more and more 5K races are popping up around the U.S. Some have crazy themes, costumes and obstacles, while some are just about running.

Before you arrive at the start line, check out these tips for how to prepare for a 5K.

  • Get the right shoes. Make sure you have good running shoes that can offer your feet the support they need while you're training.
  • Stretch before you run. To avoid any possible injuries, make sure you are properly stretching before you hit the trails.
  • If you're new to running, it's important to start slow. Don't just head out and run a practice 5K on your first day. Instead, run for time instead of distance while you're building up your endurance.
  • Don't worry about your speed. The more you run, the faster you will get. So as you're starting out, don't worry about how fast you're running. Just focus on completing the day's workout and the time will take care of itself.
