SA candle company highlights Pope John Paul II's canonization

Reed Candle Company making 4 different Pope John Paul II candles

Reed Candle Company has begun making and distributing a new line of commemorative candles to highlight the late Pope John Paul II being made a saint.

The decades-old San Antonio business, located on the city's West Side, is known largely for its religious prayer candles.

Now, it has added a line that includes four different images of the late pontiff, featured on four different colored backgrounds, just in time for Sunday's canonization by the Catholic church.

On the back of each candle are highlights of the pope's life and different quotes from him.

"He was just loved by millions and millions and millions of people, all over the world," said Sister Reed, the company's owner. "I think it's a great memory for all of us to have of such a wonderful man."

Although her name itself might inspire religious images, Reed actually is not a Catholic nun.

She was married to Peter N. Reed, the son of the company's founder, Peter Doan Reed.

Sister Reed took over the helm after her husband died in 2009.

She said this is not the first time her company has made a candle in honor of Pope John Paul II.

However, it is the first to draw attention to his impending sainthood.

It also is meant to remind people of the work he did, she said.

"How he spread peace throughout the world and how instrumental he was in bringing people back to Christianity, back to the Catholic faith," Reed said.

Although the goal is to keep his memory shining brightly forever, Reed said the pope-based candles are limited editions.

Reed Candles are sold locally at HEB stores as well as select Walmart locations.
