Alleged drunken driver arrested in fatal crash

Juan Mendoza, 27, has 2 prior DWI convictions; Faces murder charge

A man who is suspected of driving drunk and speeding, then crashing and killing another man, has been arrested on a murder charge.

San Antonio police arrested Juan Mendoza, 27, late Wednesday night at a home in the 300 block of Sims Avenue.

Officer Roger Zuniga, spokesman for SAPD, said Mendoza was driving a Hummer on April 13 when it crashed into a pickup on Old Highway 90 near 36th Street.

The driver of the truck, identified as Juan Sandoval, was killed in the crash.

Two other people in Sandoval's truck suffered serious injuries.

Zuniga said Mendoza not only was speeding and ran a stop sign, but also was legally drunk at the time of the crash.

He said Mendoza had two prior arrests for driving while intoxicated.

Because this was his third, it opened the door for him to be charged with murder, Zuniga said.
