SAPD: Nephew shoots uncle six times during family dispute

Russell Ellis charged in shooting; Steven McDonald in critical condition

A 45-year-old man is arrested in the shooting of his uncle, San Antonio police say.

A 45-year-old man visiting from California shot his 58-year-old uncle six times during a violent confrontation at a home on the city's Northeast Side early Tuesday morning.

The victim, Steven McDonald, was in critical condition at San Antonio Military Medical Center. McDonald suffered wounds to his arm, leg and upper body area, said Sgt. Tom Valdez of the San Antonio Police Department.

Police said Russell Ellis, 45, was in town to help McDonald move. But the relatives got into an argument that escalated into gunfire at a home in the 13400 block of Pebble Hollow at 1:30 a.m., Valdez said.

Ellis admitted to the shooting but said it was in self-defense, Valdez said. He was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Ellis was being held in the Bexar County Jail on $7,500 bond.
