Acting VA Secretary promises to 'fix things'
Secretary Sloan Gibson: ‘We must restore veterans' trust'
The acting Secretary of Veterans Affairs Sloan Gibson spent Friday morning touring the Audie Murphy Veterans Hospital in San Antonio, meeting with veterans and staff members.
He said he was proud of the staff and of their determination to do the right thing.
However, Gibson said that the organization had serious systemic problems, including veterans long waits for service and breaches in staff integrity.
"Those are absolutely unacceptable and they will not be tolerated in this organization," Gibson said. "In far too many instances and at far too many locations we've let our veterans down."
Gibson said it is vital that the VA become more transparent and must work to restore veterans' trust. He promised that transparency will come next week.
"On Monday, we expect to announce the detailed results of the field access audit that we've completed in the last couple of weeks and we will also release detailed wait time information," said Gibson.
Gibson, who has been on the job for exactly one week on Friday, said he plans to continue visiting local VA hospitals and meeting one-on-one with veterans to ensure that they get the treatment that they've earned and that they deserve.
