The University of the Incarnate Word has a new police chief as of June 1.

According to a UIW spokesperson, Robert Chavez took over the job at the beginning of the month.

Chavez was hired by the university last year as the assistant director for public safety.

Prior to being hired by the school, Chavez worked for the Terrell Hills Police Department for 13 years and retired as deputy chief in 1995.

Captain Jacob Colunga, Chavez's predecessor, will stay on with the university as a member of management for the police department.
