Investigators said a request for a welfare check by the New York Police Department led them to Zito's remains. New York police said they had heard allegations of possible family violence between Zito and a man named Shanell Williams.

When officers arrived at the apartment, there was no answer at the door. One officer noticed an open door on the apartment's back patio, climbed up to the second floor to investigate, and saw Zito's body lying on the living room floor.

Homicide investigators were called to the scene and a search warrant was obtained.

The San Antonio Regional Intelligence Center provided police with a description of Williams's vehicle and license plate number.

Officers later came into contact with Williams at a Church's Fried Chicken on Interstate 10 on San Antonio's East Side. They said he claimed to be suicidal and had cut his wrists.

Williams, 33, was taken into custody yesterday and was charged with murder.
