Plastic bag recycling begins Friday in SA

More items can hit the recycle bin

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio is headed into a new era of recycling.

Beginning Aug. 1, the city will start using a new recycling processor that will be able to accept plastic bags.

Yes, those grocery bags are on the top of the list.

According to the Solid Waste Management Department, there are a variety of bags that can be recycled.

  • Grocery bags
  • Dry cleaning bags
  • Newspaper bags
  • Bread bags
  • Produce bags
  • Toilet paper and paper towel wrapping
  • Water bottle case wrapping
  • Zip lock bags (zipper needs to be removed)

You just can't throw those bags loose in the bin, though.

First you have to make sure there are no receipts or paper in the bag and the bag cannot be wet. Don't put any other recyclables in the bags.

You bundle the bags, tie them up and toss them in the recycle bin.

Residents are asked not to recycle trash bags or dark bags.
