Tow truck driver shot during robbery

Driver rushed to University Hospital in critical condition

SAN ANTONIO – A tow truck driver was hospitalized in critical condition after being shot in the neck during a robbery on San Antonio's Northwest Side.

Officers at the scene near Callaghan Road and Flynn Drive said the driver was working on his truck around 1 a.m. Friday when a man with a gun approached him and demanded money.

Police said the driver told the robber he didn't have any money.

At some point, they said, the driver's wife walked up in the middle of the robbery, causing the gunman to turn his his attention and weapon toward her.

The driver then reached for a tool on his truck, hoping to use it on the robber, but the gunman shot him instead, police said.

The wounded man was rushed to University Hospital for treatment. The gunman was last seen running toward Culebra Road, police said.
