Man dies after bizarre incident on I-35

Police use taser on man after he broke away from EMS, crashed SUV

SAN ANTONIO – A strange and confusing incident ended Sunday afternoon with a man dead after police say he ran from EMS treatment and crashed his SUV before officers used a taser to subdue him.

"For whatever reason the male became agitated during the treatment," said Sgt. Javier Salazar of the San Antonio Police Department.

The bizarre incident began around 12:30 p.m. when EMS responded to treat a man on the Interstate 35 access road near Eisenhauer Road.

They arrived to find the partially nude man inside a Jeep Cherokee with his lowered body exposed.

Police say when paramedics tried to move the man he broke away from them and drove away in his SUV.

"He actually struck the gurney he had been on just moments before and dragged it for some distance in his vehicle," said Salazar.

The man drove toward the intersection of I-35 and Eisenhauer and crashed into a pickup.

Police tried to calm the man down, but it didn't work.

"He continued to fight with officers, officers did deploy a taser. The suspect did go down at that point, they were able to get him into custody and EMS began treating him," Salazar said.

Police say EMS transported him to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities have not yet released the cause of death or whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.

Investigators are now attempting to piece the circumstances together.

According to police, a witness says there might of been one other victim in the crash, possibly a motorcyclist or bicyclist. Police are working to find out who that person is.
