Worker killed by falling bag of sand on North Side

Police: 1.5 tons of sand fell on victim

SAN ANTONIO – A man in his 60s was killed Monday when a 3,500 pound sack of fracking sand fell on him.

"The man was on the ground walking around doing some spotting for a forklift operator and it was during that that apparently one of these bags fell on him," said Christian Bove, Public Information Officer with the San Antonio Fire Department.

The accident was reported to authorities around 10:30 a.m. Monday.

It happened inside a warehouse on the 19500 block of Bulverde Road. Chalk Mountain Services of Texas, LLC, operates the warehouse.

"What we have inside of this warehouse is several bags, large bags- about 3,500 pounds each- of fracking sand," Bove said. "These bags are stacked about three or four high."

According to Chalk Mountain's website, it is an "oilfield transportation company" that specializes in "hauling production and flow back water as well as frac sand."

The company has not released a statement or additional information on the accident or the victim.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner has not yet released the victim's name or specific cause of death.

San Antonio Police are investigating how the accident happened.
