SA ranks 2nd in state for highest rate of child abuse, neglect

SAN ANTONIO – It is a statewide Blue Ribbon Task Force created more than 10 years ago to combat the abuse and neglect of children.

Monday night, the task force, headed by state Sen. Carlos Uresti, had its quarterly meeting at Our Lady of the Lake University to share and develop plans to combat child abuse.

San Antonio ranks second in the state for having the highest rate of children being abused or neglected.

In fact, Uresti said last year, 60 percent of children who died in San Antonio died from neglect.

"That means it was preventable. That means they might have gotten their hands on someone's gun and shot themselves, they drowned, the mother fell asleep and rolled over on them, those are preventable, neglectful acts," said Uresti.

The Blue Ribbon Task Force is made up of community leaders who are advocates for children and parental support.
