Police arrest suspect in carjacking, store robbery

Victim ID's Peter Bernal, 34, in photo lineup

SAN ANTONIO – A 34-year-old man was arrested following the robbery of a Southeast Side store and the carjacking of a driver in the parking lot of that business.

Peter John Bernal was taken into custody on Wednesday, one day after the crimes were committed and after San Antonio police obtained an arrest warrant.

An arrest warrant affidavit stated that officers responded Aug. 19 to a Dollar General store in the 5800 block of Pecan Valley Drive and learned that a man had used a gun to rob the clerk.

The affidavit also stated that police found out the same man then showed the gun to a woman in the parking lot and demanded her car.

A short time later, officers spotted the stolen vehicle and gave chase until the driver and a passenger bailed out, the affidavit stated.

Police soon caught the passenger but the driver got away.

The affidavit stated detectives later showed the car owner Bernal's picture in a photo lineup and she identified him as the man who had carjacked her.

Bernal was arrested Wednesday on charges of aggravated robbery and resisting arrest.
