Council members call for UTSA overlay zone

SAN ANTONIO – Two San Antonio City Council members are calling on the city to develop an overlay zone near the University of Texas at San Antonio campuses in an effort to help the university reach tier one status.

District 8 Councilman Ron Nirenberg and District 5 Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales filed a council consideration request Thursday.

They say the university could help lure investment of campus-oriented developments.

The proposed zone would make sure the housing capacity keeps pace with demand while maintaining a safe environment for students.

As assessment conducted two years ago found nearly 94,000 college students live in the San Antonio area.

That number is expected to exceed 120,000 in the next decade.
