Family mourning loved one may be victims of theft

Babineaux family possible victims of donation conmen

SAN ANTONIO – Tatyana Babineaux, 9, was a victim of a deadly hit-and-run in January.

Her death prompted many to reach out to the Babineaux family and even donate to a GoFundMe account labeled the "Tatyana Memorial."

According to site, $16,000 worth of donations were made.

Police said the money collected for the family was diverted for other purposes that authorities could not elaborate on.

"Here they are being victimized again by someone who apparently they thought they could trust," said Sgt. Javier Salazar with the San Antonio Police Department.

Gina Babineauz, Tatyana's mother, and the creator of the account are not suspects, according to police.

"When you start talking about donations and large sums of money like that, it brings out the opportunistic, conman people that don't just have the best of intentions," Salazar said.

Police said GoFundMe has also cooperated in the investigation.

"The sites themselves are not the problem at all. In a perfect world you would be able to collect money like this to help offset the cost of whatever catastrophic event just happened in your life," said Salazar.

Police are asking anyone who donated to help by filing out a statement, stating that you donated, how much you donated and the reason for the donation.
