Pct. 4 constable injured in accident on NW side

Directing traffic when hit by car; police question driver

SAN ANTONIO – A Precinct 4 constable was injured Friday when he was hit by a car on San Antonio's Northwest Side.

Brian Boyce was working off-duty, directing traffic for a construction company in the 5800 block of De Zavala Road, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

Boyce entered the roadway on foot to stop westbound traffic when he was hit by a car, knocking him to the ground.

Police said a 96-year-old man driving westbound on De Zavala in a Chevrolet Caprice hit Boyce, and then kept driving.

A witness followed the driver and called police. The driver said he remembered a construction worker signaling him to stop, but his foot slipped off the brake and he kept driving. He said he did not realize he hit Boyce.

Boyce was taken to University Hospital in serious condition.

According to police, he was in stable condition Friday afternoon and was being treated for a broken bone in his shoulder, facial lacerations and mouth injury.
