DA: Woman believed relative possessed by devil, tried to 'cleanse' child

Raymon Valadez, 30; Cassandra Ortiz, 27, indicted on sex assault, injury to a child charges

SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio woman and her boyfriend were indicted on sexual assault and injury to a child charges after police found a young relative of the woman unresponsive in her bathroom.

According to a statement issued by the Bexar County District Attorney's Office, Cassandra Ortiz, 27, told officers the child was possessed by the devil and "had to be cleansed."

Officers were at Ortiz's West Military Drive apartment, responding to an assault call. Ortiz was allegedly fighting with another woman when police arrived.

Inside the apartment, officers found Ortiz's relative in the bathroom, curled in the fetal position, with a green substance coming from the child's mouth. EMS was called and when paramedics arrived, they removed a large piece of soap from the child's airway.

The child was taken to University Hospital in critical condition.

Doctors discovered the child had been physically and sexually assaulted. Investigators believe Ortiz's boyfriend, Raymon Valadez, 30, participated in the abuse.

Ortiz and Valadez were each indicted by a Bexar County grand jury on charges of super aggravated sexual assault of a child and injury to a child causing serious bodily injury. Ortiz was also indicted on a separate charge of injury to a child causing bodily injury.

Bonds for Valadez and Ortiz are set at $250,000 each and both remain in the Bexar County Jail.
