Power goes out at the Tower of the Americas

SAN ANTONIO – The Tower of the Americas was without power Friday night after the lights went out earlier in the afternoon.

According to a statement from the Property General Manager Carlton Quick, the electrical line that provides power to the tower failed around 5:30 p.m.

Officials at the tower expected the electricity to be restored within a few hours.

A handful of people chose to make the climb down the 952 steps to get out. Others chose to stay and finish their dinner until the power was back on.

"They gave us the option to walk down all the way down which is what we ended up doing, but we first just stuck it out and waited to see how it was," said tower guest Kristen Olguin.

All but five employees evacuated the tower when the power went out.

Crews with the San Antonio Fire Department arrived on the scene just after 9 p.m.

The cause of the power failure is under investigation.
