Officers who responded to the scene around 1 a.m. found Lopez suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

They said witnesses told them a man had arrived at Lopez's home, looking for his ex-girlfriend, whom he wanted to take home with him.

When the woman refused, Lopez intervened and was shot in the arm and upper body, police said.

Lopez was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center where he died.

A police report stated that the shooting suspect jumped into a vehicle, driven by someone else, and left the scene.

It stated that the suspect left his own vehicle in the driveway outside Lopez's home.

Hours after the shooting, a woman who answered the door at Lopez's home, pointed out a grey Kia sedan in the driveway, saying that it was the shooter's car.

She said Lopez left behind two young children -- ages 1 and 7 -- and that the family is devastated.
