Suspect caught stealing from apartment mailboxes

Man caught stealing from mailboxes at Outpost apartments on UTSA Boulevard

SAN ANTONIO – Several University of Texas at San Antonio students who live at the Outpost Apartments in the 6800 block of UTSA Boulevard checked their mailboxes Friday morning to make sure there wasn't anything missing after a man was caught breaking into the boxes.

"Of all the things to steal, you're stealing mail? That's just not cool," said Connor Metoyer.

"Bank statements, personal information, medical bills, stuff like that -- that's what I'd be concerned about," said Gabriel Yanez.

Around 4 a.m., an off-duty officer spotted a man stealing from the mailboxes at the Northwest Side apartment complex.

The officer confronted the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Chelsie Ryan Martinez, and attempted to arrest him, but Martinez drove away, police said.

The officer followed Martinez down Interstate 10 until marked patrol cars could pull him over.

Police arrested Martinez on a county warrant, and he was also charged with evading arrest.

Police said he could also face federal charges for stealing mail.

Postal inspectors picked up the stolen mail and took over the investigation.

They were also looking into whether Martinez stole mail from other locations.
