Elementary school copes with loss of classmate run over by aunt

Evelyn Villareal, 6, killed after being dropped off at birthday party

SAN ANTONIO – Extra counselors were brought in to an elementary school after one of its students, Evelyn Villareal, was run over by her aunt on Saturday.

Adelfa Barron was dropping her 6-year-old niece off at a birthday party when she failed to see the girl walk in front of the truck. Villareal was airlifted to University Hospital, but later died.

Five Palms Elementary School Principal Greg Martinez said it's important to show support to the family and help students understand this part of life.

"She was a very loving student, very giving. Teachers and the staff, the students are all going to miss her very much," he said.

The school will hold a candlelight vigil to remember the girl Wednesday at 6 p.m.
