Motorcyclist killed in NW Military Highway crash

SAN ANTONIO – A motorcyclist in his 40s was killed in a crash Monday afternoon on the city's Northwest Side.

Police said the motorcyclist was traveling south on Northwest Military Highway near Loop 1604 when an 18-wheeler headed northbound on the highway turned left in front of the motorcycle. Police said the big rig turned on a non-protected green light.

The motorcyclist tried to lay down his bike, but his head hit the pavement, police said.

The victim's helmet shattered and was killed instantly.

"My understanding is those helmets are only rated up to a certain size of impact, so we are looking to see what was that helmet rated for," said Sgt. Javier Salazar, a spokesman with the San Antonio Police Department. "It's quite possible the impact was such that the helmet may not have been able to prevent that."

The driver of the big rig stopped and was cooperating with police. There was no immediate word if he will be cited.
