VIA discusses new project

SAN ANTONIO – With VIA's streetcar project derailed the company decided Wednesday to propose a new Downtown shuttle for passengers.

The VIA Board discussed the proposal Tuesday but the group wanted more information before authorizing the 3-month pilot program.

Though the new route is similar to streetcar's routes, VIA officials said the projects are vastly different in cost and in structure.

"It operates on some of the portion of some of the streetcar I would start with that," said Jeffrey Arndt, VIA President. "We're also looking at a service that would run from 6 p.m. to midnight, the streetcar would have run far greater hours so that comparison is not a very strong comparison I would say."

The cost of the service is estimated to be about $200-thousand. The proposal is expected to go back to the VIA board in December.

Arndt said the pilot program would cost about $40-thousand.
