First non-stop flight to Mexico City departs from SA

SAN ANTONIO – Travelers in San Antonio can now catch non-stop daily flights to Mexico City.

The first flight took off from San Antonio International Airport Sunday.

Southwest Airlines celebrated the new route just before takeoff with live music at the gate.

The flight comes as a result of a merger between Southwest and Airtran Airways.

Ramiro Cavazos, president and CEO of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, said he is excited about the new flight.

"To have San Antonio, the gateway to Mexico, to have a direct flight to Mexico City from San Antonio means a lot to the Hispanic community. But primarily to the Hispanic business community that's looking for convenience, frequent travel and affordability," said Cavazos.

Departure flights from San Antonio are scheduled for 11:45 a.m. every day, with return flights arriving at 6:15 p.m.
