Polo enthusiasts work to bring sport to Alamo City

SAN ANTONIO – Local polo enthusiasts are working to bring the sport back to the Alamo City.

The San Antonio Polo Club hosted a fundraiser match Sunday afternoon at Olmos Basin Park.

Officials with the nonprofit say the sport used to be popular in the city with regular matches at Retama and Brackenridge parks.

Members work to raise awareness of the sport, especially with less privileged kids who might otherwise never get to play.

"You learn to trust each other and it's a great feeling. When you're a child and you've got 1,000 pound animal at the end of your hand, you're in charge and they're respecting whatever you do. And that's a great feeling for them," said Susana Baird, riding instructor.

The club currently has a facility in Bolverde and are in the process of putting up a new barn, polo field and arena.
