Firefighter hurt; 76 evacuated in seat belt plant fire

Fire breaks out at Takata Seat Belts Inc. manufacturing plant; Firefighter injures hand

SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio firefighter was hospitalized and dozens of people were evacuated when a small fire broke out at a far West Side seat belt plant early Thursday morning.

San Antonio fire crews responded to a report of smoke around 12:30 a.m. at the Takata Seat Belts Inc. manufacturing plant in the 4600 block of Wiseman Boulevard.

Officials said the fire started in a filter that removes dust from the air, but the building itself was not on fire.

More than 70 people were inside the plant when the filter caught fire and they all made it out safe.

A firefighter hurt his hand and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Fire officials have not said what caused the fire or released damage estimates.
