SAN MARCOS – Black Friday is 48 hours away, but shoppers at the Tanger Outlets in San Marcos could not wait to find a good holiday deal.

"It's the discounts," Walker Hummel said when asked why he was shopping before Thanksgiving. "I rather spend time with my family than go shopping on Thanksgiving."

More than 100,000 people are expected to visit the Tanger Outlets this weekend, with many customers coming from as far as Mexico to find a good deal. General Manager John Lairson said the outlets are getting an earlier start than last year.

"Eight years ago we were opening at midnight and every year it's inched up a little bit," Lairson said. "Last year I believe we opened at 8 p.m. and this year we'll be opening at 6 p.m. Thanksgiving Day."

While saving money drives many consumers to brave the Black Friday chaos, Kay Santillan said she gets her shopping done early to avoid it and spend time with family

"We're here to shop today because I don't want to come out," she said.

Not only do the discounts keep money in customers' wallets, but they also provide a hefty paycheck for some employees.

"Money is my motivation, that's why I'm working all the time," said Journeys manager Angel Santillan. "Holidays don't faze me. I won't be home for Christmas either."
