Driver killed when car flies into pole, bursts into flames

Man killed in crash on FM 78 at Gibbs Sprawl Road in Kirby

SAN ANTONIO – A man was killed in a fiery crash in Kirby early Thursday morning.

Police said a car was speeding around 3:30 a.m. on FM 78 near Gibbs Sprawl Road when the driver struck the edge of a curb and flew into a traffic light pole about 20 yards away.

The pole fell onto the car right before it burst into flames. Police said another driver pulled the driver from the car, but he had already passed away.

Police said the driver was a 20-year-old man from San Antonio. His name has not been released.

Kirby police said drivers were expected to face delays throughout the morning commute and the traffic light would not be fixed until around 5 p.m.

Police have not said if speed was the only factor that led to the fatal crash or if any other vehicles were involved.
