Fugitive wanted in $800k ID theft scheme surrenders

Thalia Diaz Camareno appeared before a judge Wednesday

SAN ANTONIO – Nearly three weeks after federal prosecutors said they were looking for a woman accused of stealing the identities of more than 800 people, Thalia Diaz Camareno surrendered.

Camareno, 29, was wanted on a 10-count indictment on charges including conspiracy to commit mail fraud, mail fraud and aggravated identity theft.

The indictment alleges Camareno and Antonin Julio Nazaro stole hundreds of identities, filed fake tax returns and cashed more than $807,096 in refund checks between June 2010 and January 2012.

Camareno surrendered to authorities and appeared before a federal judge in Houston Wednesday.

Nazaro has already had one court appearance. He's being held without bond.
