Special election date set to fill District 123 seat

Rep. Mike Villarreal steps down to run for SA mayor


SAN ANTONIO – Former Rep. Mike Villarreal announced on Twitter Friday afternoon that Gov. Rick Perry has set a date for the special election to fill Villarreal's seat.

Villarreal said the special election will be held on Jan. 6. 

He stepped down from his seat in the House District 123 to run for San Antonio mayor.

Three others have jumped into the race for mayor: former Councilman Diego Bernal, Melissa Aguillon and former Councilman and former Rep. Walter Martinez.

KSAT-12 has not heard back from the governor's office for comment on this story.
