Driver killed in violent crash near downtown

SAPD: Crash victim reportedly driving wrong-way before wreck

SAN ANTONIO – A man died in violent high-speed crash early Tuesday morning in the downtown area.

Around 3:30 a.m., San Antonio police received calls about a wrong way driver on Interstate 35 near Nogalitos.

Minutes later they got a call about a car that had crashed on the S Pecos La Trinidad access road just south of Guadalupe Street.

Officers arrived and found a 4-door Infiniti that had smashed into a support pillar.

Firefighters responded to cut the driver out of the mangled car, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver was the only person in the car and no other injuries were reported.

The driver's name has not been released, but he was believed to be in his late 30s, police said. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
