Local runner, 70, finishes 1,410th marathon

Larry Macon still running, defending world records

SAN ANTONIO – Former San Antonio lawyer Larry Macon has become a local celebrity of sorts. In the world of running, the septuagenarian has reached superstar status.

On Wednesday, he finished his twelfth marathon in 12 days -- part of a running series called "12 Drummers Drumming."

With his finish, he now has 1,410 marathons under his belt after 18 years of running.

Wednesday morning also marked another milestone: Macon's 70th birthday.

When asked why he would spend his 70th birthday running in the bitter cold, Macon responded, "It's magnificent. It's because we can, because you can challenge yourself. You can have a wonderful day and there's nothing better than running."

"He leaves you speechless. When you want to stop and you see Larry, you keep going," said Tara Woodward, a fellow marathon runner.

"If he's out here for over 1,400 marathons at 70 years old, I can be doing it at 31," said marathoner Derek Somerville, who cited Macon as an inspiration.

Macon's list of accomplishments is long and impressive. Macon is the current world record-holder for the most marathons run in one year, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. It is a record he first set in 2008 and broke in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013.  In 2013, he ran 255 marathons.

With a total of 36,942 miles run, Macon could have run around the Earth's equator one-and-a-half times.

"I think it's wonderful. I think the opportunity is wonderful and I feel great that I'm able to do it," said Macon of the feat.
