Van plunges into drainage ditch near Woodlawn Lake

SAN ANTONIO – A woman died and a man was critically injured after a van plunged into a drainage ditch near Woodlawn Lake.

San Antonio police said the crash happened around 2:15 a.m. Thursday at Emory Street and Mistletoe Avenue.

Police said the van was headed north on Emory, but the driver failed to notice where the road ends and did not stop.

The van smashed through a guardrail and fell about 10 feet into a concrete drainage ditch.

The victim died at the scene and the injured man was transported to University Hospital.

Police believe there was a third person in the van who fled the crash scene.

Investigators said the front windshield had been smashed out, so police believe someone possibly crawled out after the plunge.

Police continue to investigate who was driving, but said the injured man would be given a mandatory blood draw to check for alcohol.

The name of the woman killed in the crash has not been released. It took several hours and a pair of tow trucks to clear this scene due to the steep drop.
